The city-state of Singapore became independent from Malaysia in 1965, only some 268 square miles in size currently it is growing slowly through land reclamation but has primarily built upwards and features some beautiful modern skyscrapers as well as old colonial buildings including the cricket club.

There are undeniably signs of European influence here but also influence from across South East Asia including Indian, Malay and Chinese, all of whom have large communities here. Apart from taking in the modern city you can take in the Sri Mariammam temple and the Botanical Gardens, 166 acres of them with the most wonderful array of orchids.
